To Celebrate Her 84th Birthday, This Woman Went Skydiving!

Age is definitely just a number and Dodie Bruening from Irmo, South Carolina proved that fact once again, when she went skydiving to celebrate her 84th birthday. Most 84-year-old people can barely walk, if that, and this amazing elderly woman is strapping on a parachute to jump out of planes to party it up on her b-day! Wow!

She had originally planned on doing the jump for her 80th birthday, but she ended up falling and breaking her wrist that year shortly before her birthday and couldn’t make the jump happen as a result. Of course, that wasn’t going to stop her from crossing skydiving off her bucket list, so she finally did it on her 84th birthday instead! Asked to describe what skydiving felt like, she brilliantly said, “I felt like an angel up there, flying around like a butterfly.”

It all happened at Skydive Carolina and Dodie even wrote a poem to prepare for her jump out of a plane at 14,000! Check it out.

Going Skydiving by Dodie Bruening

Today I’m going to do it, I’ll jump out of a plane…
Although two of my doctors said, “I think you are insane”

I said, “It’s on my bucket list, of things I want to do”…
One said, “I tried but chickened out”, Some folks think I might too”

Well today I plan to show them all, though crazy it might seem…
I’m sure I will experience, what only some can dream

I understand what tandem means, but my mind can’t compute…
Why when two are jumping is there just one parachute?

I’ll jump at 14,000 ft. and then fall through the sky…
The term that’s used is “sky dive” but, it is my chance to fly

I will fly higher than the birds, the way my loved ones do…
And say to them when I come down, “One day I’ll fly to you”

But today is just for practice, with blue sky all around…
My goals to get this over with, and get back on the ground

Hug my son and say to him, “son, now I am a flyer”…
Ready for my final trip, when I’ll be flying higher”

But first I’ll get my bucket list, where I’m keeping score…
And put a check by Sky Diving at age of eighty four.

About Sascha Brian

Sascha Brian
Known around here as "the German", I am indeed German, but have also spent some time traveling the world. With 10 years of my life spent in the United States, rumor has it that I may even know how to grill a great burger. I don't wear socks with sandals any longer, but I still drink beer and eat sauerkraut like a German. When I'm not writing about motivational and inspirational people on Like A Boss, I can usually be found lifting things up and putting them back down in my garage gym (a.k.a. the dungeon).
